Learn MoreCatalogue by Dr. Stephen D. Borys, with essays by T. Barton Thurber, Curator of European Art at the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, on the antique sources and architectural styles used by French painters; art historian Alan Wintermute, on the continuation of the pastoral tradition in the generations after Claude Lorrain; and Stephen Borys, on the documenting and collecting of ruins by artists, architects, travelers, and art historians. Borys, with the assistance of students in the art history department at Oberlin College, has produced scholarly biographies and entries for each artist and painting, supplemented by notes, provenance, and exhibition histories. The full-page color plates of the featured works are augmented with a generous selection of related illustrations of paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs, including many of the sources that informed the artists. A comprehensive bibliography includes a listing of the illustrated architectural books and treatises that were available to artists and others interested in the antique.
Softback (2005; 202 pp.; 40 full-page color ill., and 83 black & white ill.).
Published by the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College. $40.00 (includes shipping).
