In this exhibition, approximately 150 photographs by Andy Warhol—recently donated to the AMAM by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts—are shown alongside Warhol prints and paintings in the AMAM's collection.
The photographs include both Polaroids and silver gelatin prints and cover a wide array of subject matter, from portraits and landscapes to still lifes and nudes. They date from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. The gift was made in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Foundation, to provide greater access to Warhol's artwork and process. As Jenny Moore, curator of the Foundation's Photographic Legacy Program, has said of Warhol, "Through his rigorous—though almost unconscious—consistency in shooting, the true idiosyncrasies of his subjects were revealed."
The AMAM is proud to have received this generous gift. In exhibiting these photographs alongside iconic images previously in the cllection—Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as the series of Mao Tse-Tung and the Electric Chair—the new gift will be seen within the greater context of Warhol's art, life and work.
