This exhibition invites viewers to look past Japan’s celebrated tradition of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and discover the vibrant world of modern and contemporary printmaking in Japan. While woodblocks remain iconic, many contemporary artists in Japan have embraced other processes to explore new ideas and aesthetics. The exhibition’s first half highlights bold screenprints and expressive lithographs, while the second focuses on the rich tonalities of etchings and mezzotints. Whether through dynamic calligraphic abstractions, etchings of traditional architecture, transcendent visions of the cosmos, or mezzotints of fruit and foliage, these prints offer fresh diverse perspectives on Japan’s evolving visual language.
