From Our Walls to Yours: Recent Additions to the Art Rental Collection

Three works of art recently purchased for the Art Rental collection explore themes of intersectionality, sexuality, culture, myth, and legacy. Each work of art was selected by a different curator. Kevin R.E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art, selected the drawing Sheep from artist Lu Ke’s Chinese Zodiac series of anthropomorphized figures challenging traditional visual representations. Curator of Academic Programs Hannah Wirta Kinney chose Justice Etching, a work by Kent Monkman that comically upends colonial power dynamics through sexual innuendo. Alexandra Letvin, curator of European and American art, chose a screenprint by Yétundé Olagbaju titled For Edmonia, an homage to Edmonia Lewis, an African American and Native American sculptor. Lewis gained renown across America and Europe after a painful chapter as an Oberlin College student (1859–1863), which was marred by false accusations and violence against her. From Our Walls to Yours provides an opportunity to see the new works of art before they are available to rent on October 16.
