Portraits of the Black Experience

September 1, 2005 - October 15, 2006
In Ambulatory

What does it mean for an artist to represent him or herself, his or her culture? Portraits of the Black Experience exhibition includes 20 works by African-American artists—from Richmond Barth and Horace Pippin to Willie Cole and Carrie Mae Weems—that quietly infuse representations of Black life and consciousness with individualism and passion.

This exhibition, which investigates Black artists' cultural heritage in powerful images, complements a wide range of subjects by courses taught in the African American Studies Department.

Organized by Susanna Newbury '05 in collaboration with Stephen D. Borys, curator of Western art.
