The AMAM has a longstanding tradition of collecting and exhibiting modern and contemporary art, and for years has been at the forefront of college art museums in acquiring works by emerging artists of the day. Continuing with the museum wide survey of the permanent collection, this exhibition takes the viewer from 1950 to 1980, showcasing some of the museum’s finest paintings and sculptures produced during this period.

American artists stand out in this exciting review of postwar art as we see the fundamental role played by North America in the evolution of abstract art. The major forces of the day-abstract expressionism, hard edge abstraction, color field painting, minimalism, and postmodern art are presented in this retrospective of collecting trends and discoveries at the AMAM. Included are seminal works by André, Calder, Diebenkorn, Dine, Guston, Judd, Lichtenstein, Martin, Nevelson, Rothko, Serra, Stella, Warhol, and Winsor.
