Who are the arhats, the enlightened disciples of the Buddha who appear throughout Buddhist art and literature? Join Kevin R. E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art, for an introduction to two remarkable Tibetan Buddhist paintings on loan from the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, home to North America’s foremost collection of Himalayan art. These exquisite artworks offer a window into the rich visual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Through close looking and engaging storytelling, Greenwood will explore who the arhats are, how artists have depicted them across centuries in China and Tibet, and what these extraordinary paintings reveal about Buddhist beliefs, artistic practice, and cultural exchange.
