A Woman Artist and Her Subject: Giovanna Garzoni's Portrait of Ṣägga Krәstos

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this talk Christina Neilson, associate professor of Renaissance and Baroque art history and chair of art history at Oberlin College, considers why Sägga Krәstos commissioned a portrait miniature of himself by the 17th-century artist Giovanna Garzoni. What might the miniature tell us about Garzoni as a working woman artist? What does the presence of the artist’s signatures on the reverse of the painting—in both Italian and in Krәstos’ native language of Amharic—imply about the social relationship between artist and sitter?

While we would like to host in-person events at the Allen in the spring, due to the unpredictable nature of COVID, we may need to switch to an online format. If you would like to be informed about event plans as they develop, please complete this form.
