Yvonne Elet, associate professor of the history of art and architecture at Vassar College, will deliver Oberlin College's Harold Jantz Memorial Lecture on the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. While Raphael was praised during his lifetime as the “prince of painters,” a description rendered indelible by Giorgio Vasari, this characterization has long obscured the artist’s achievements in other modes. We now recognize Raphael’s role as Rome’s chief architect and his designs for many media, but his innovative and complex work across mediums is little understood.
This talk explores the artist’s grand-scale designs integrating architecture, landscape, sculpture, painted and stucco decoration, gardens, waterworks, urban design, sightlines, and performance. Elet will present a new and holistic view of Raphael’s inventiveness, and his importance in the development of Western art and architecture.
About the Jantz Memorial Lecture
The Jantz Lectureship honors Harold Jantz ’29, one of Oberlin’s most distinguished literary scholars. Established in 1988 through the generosity of family, friends, colleagues, former students, and Oberlin classmates of Professor Jantz, the endowed lectureship fund supports public lectures and symposia in the fields of Jantz’s primary professional interests: German literature and literary history, German and American literary relations, art and art history, and bibliophilism. Lectures and programs are selected on a rotating basis by the director of libraries, the chair of the German department, and the director of the Allen Memorial Art Museum.
