Tuesday Tea: Warding Off Evil on the Dragon Boat Festival: The Complex Symbolism of 'Auspicious Still Life'

Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Kevin R.E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art, gives an in-depth presentation on a painting in the exhibition "The Enchantment of the Everyday: East Asian Decorative Arts from the Permanent Collection" (through July 19, 2020). Chinese decorative arts frequently feature symbols and motifs believed to attract good fortune or repel dangerous forces.

The 18th-century painting "Auspicious Still Life" presents an unusually complex assortment of such symbols, many of which relate to the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival celebrated each summer. Greenwood describes the festival and decodes the multilayered meanings of this fascinating work.

The presentation will air via the museum's Instagram and Facebook pages at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12. Message us on social media before Thursday (5/14) at 3:00 p.m. EDT, when Greenwood will appear on our Instagram LIVE (@allenartmuseum) to answer them. You can also submit your question(s) via email.

This program is part of the AMAM's Tuesday Tea series highlighting works in the AMAM collection, held on second Tuesdays of the month during the academic year.
