In 1988, Zhang Peili borrowed a camcorder and recorded himself breaking and repairing a mirror over three painstaking hours in a time-based artwork called "30 x 30," which is considered the first act of video art production by an artist in China. Curatorial Assistant Emma Laube ’17 discusses her exhibition "Boredom Aesthetics: The Early Videos of Zhang Peili," examining television and avant-garde culture in late-20th century China.
