Tuesday Tea: Ann Sherif

Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Stories of lovers, warriors, gods, and spirits are frequent subjects in Japanese performing arts. Professor of East Asian Studies Ann Sherif discusses ukiyo-e prints depicting kabuki actors, nō dance and song, and bunraku puppetry in the current exhibition "Japan on Stage." Presented in conjunction with the Arts of Asia series at Oberlin College.

Professor of East Asian Studies Ann Sherif explores the ukiyo-e prints in the exhibition "Japan on Stage" in the context of Japan’s vibrant and influential tradition of performing arts. Sherif situates the images of kabuki actors, Noh dance and song, and bunraku puppets in the dynamic urban culture of 17th-20th century Japan, and considers the appeal of stories of lovers, warriors, cross-dressers, and mountain spirits for viewers and audiences today.
