The Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Nowick-Taylor Deputy Director. This is a full-time, 12-month Administrative and Professional Staff position, reporting to the museum’s John G. W. Cowles Director. The Deputy Director is responsible for the museum’s budgeting and business operations and leads museum staff in the areas of security, operations, collections management, and art handling and preparation. As a new, fully-funded position at the museum, the role will require collaboration with the Director to shape its contours.

Responsibilities

Leadership and management

  • Supervising Registrar, Manager of Property Protection, Departmental Secretary, and any student workers hired by the Deputy Director, including hiring, training, work allocation, and performance appraisal.
  • Supporting the museum’s strategic plan and executing the tactics related to business and building operations.
  • Leading the museum in the Director’s absence.
  • Coordinating the museum’s application for reaccreditation (next due in 2032)

Business operations

  • Preparing the museum’s annual operating and personnel budgets as well as future financial projections for long-term planning.
  • Assisting the Director and staff with strategic budget planning.
  • Managing the museum’s expenses and encumbrances, using data from the Oberlin College enterprise resource planning system.
  • Training and assisting staff on budgeting and accounting procedures.
  • Overseeing requests for payment, reimbursements, and transfers of funds.
  • Providing higher level accounting and support to the Department Secretary for routine accounting tasks.
  • Budgeting and monitoring program funds for exhibitions, projects, educational initiatives, and programming.
  • Coordinating grants in collaboration with Oberlin College’s Office of Foundation, Government, and Corporate Grants; developing, monitoring, and reporting on budgets related to grants.
  • Managing HR processes for the museum and serving as liaison for hiring and other standard HR functions, in collaboration with Oberlin College’s Department of Human Resources and the Chief Business Officer in the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Coordinating complex reports, analyses, and projections for the Director.
  • Facilitating communications between the College’s Controller’s Office and museum staff; working with other administrative offices within the College.
  • Reviewing and facilitating contracts for the museum, in collaboration with the Museum Registrar, educators and curators, and the Oberlin College General Counsel’s office
  • Leading earned revenue initiatives at the museum, including merchandise and sales.

Building operations

  • Managing the operations of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Weltzheimer/Johnson House, including responsibility for the maintenance and renovations of the house (in collaboration with the College’s office of Facilities Planning and Construction), coordinating ticketing, and developing earned revenue.
  • Providing guidance for museum security, in collaboration with the Manager of Property Protection and the campus office of Campus Safety
  • Serving as project manager for museum renovation projects, in collaboration with Manager of Property Protection and Facilities Planning and Construction
  • In collaboration with the Director, serving as project manager on the museum’s projected expansion project

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
  • Five years of experience in managing organizational budgets or accounting
  • Five years of experience in managing employees
  • Knowledge of budget procedures and computerized accounting, including creating and working with relational databases, spreadsheets, and graphing software
  • Meticulous work habits and attention to detail; consistency in procedures and quality of effort in all areas of work
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and to meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Capacity to represent the museum in a professional manner to donors, lenders, professional colleagues, and all college constituencies
  • Project management experience
  • Ability to model and establish a culture of mutual respect, transparency, and empowerment.
  • An affinity for relationship building and broad network engagement.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in accounting or related field
  • Leadership experience
  • Experience working in a museum or non-profit arts organization
  • Experience working in an academic institution
  • Experience developing budget fluency for other staff members

Compensation

Within the range established for this position, salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an excellent benefits package. [Note that to post on museum-related job boards, position description must include a salary range – 100,900 – 118,680.
