Learn MoreThe AMAM’s holdings of ancient art include a wide-ranging collection of works from Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, and Rome, as well as a smaller number of objects from Hittite, Sumerian, Persian, and Etruscan cultures.
Highlights of the collection include a painted relief from an Egyptian tomb, a drinking cup by the Greek potter Pamphaios and painter Epiktetos, and an elaborate Roman bust of a silenus, a jovial man who often accompanies Bacchus in scenes of feasting and drinking. Pottery is particularly well represented, with examples of Cypriot earthenware jugs, Greek oil flasks, and Roman oil lamps. The collection also features marble and porphyry busts, marble reliefs, fragments of sarcophagi, coins, glassware, bronzes, and jewelry.
