This free family- and student-friendly event includes tours of the exhibition, artmaking, music, and fun for all ages. NOV 2 / 5:30 PM ALLEN AFTER HOURS / MUSEUMS AS SITES FOR CLIMATE PROTEST Climate change protests at art museums have been the subject of headline news and debate on Oberlin’s campus. Why have art museums become such potent venues for activism? Do these protests advance or hurt their intended causes? In conjunction with the exhibition Anthropocene Aesthetics, this panel discussion will address these pressing questions from a range of perspectives. ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION Most events at the Allen will be held in a wheelchair- and rolling walker-accessible building. The lecture space is wheelchair accessible, with moveable seating, and near wheelchair-accessible restrooms. Restrooms are gender-specific; visitors are invited to use the restroom of their preference. Listening devices will be available for use during the Allen After Hours presentations, but ASL interpretation will not be offered. NOV 14 / 3 PM TUESDAY TEA / NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE ALLEN’S ASIAN COLLECTION Join Kevin R. E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art, for an introduction to the newly reinstalled long-term exhibitions of Asian art from the Allen’s permanent collection. Greenwood will introduce exciting new acquisitions, exhibited here for the first time, as well as updated perspectives on familiar favorites. DEC 7 / 5:30 PM ALLEN AFTER HOURS / DAWOUD BEY IN CONVERSATION Join us for a special conversation between artist Dawoud Bey and faculty member Chanda Feldman. DEC 12 / 3 PM TUESDAY TEA / CHOCOLATE & LUXURY Derived from cacao beans produced in Mesoamerica, chocolate reached wealthy European consumers through global trade routes. The social practice of drinking hot chocolate spurred a demand for specialized vessels and luxurious accessories to serve this fashionable treat. Marlise Brown, Assistant Curator of European and American Art, will discuss Jean-Baptiste Joseph Le Roux’s silver Chocolate Pot in relation to luxury, colonialism, and the social ritual of consuming chocolate in 18th-century Europe.
